Coming into the field of ceramics at the ripe old age of 48, was the realisation of a long standing ambition.

The complete change from being a well paid Local Government Officer to a poverty stricken ceramics student was less of a cultural shock than I expected, but it gave me a determination to succeed following gaining a 'First Class' (Hons) Degree in 2000.

Life begins at 50?.....

In the few years since I graduated I have had my work displayed in galleries and other venues both nationally and in New York and have been accepted as a professional member of the Craft Potters Association.

There have been many influences on the direction my work has taken, not least the workshops I attended with ceramists such as David & Margaret Frith, Ian Gregory and in particular Jane Perryman who fuelled my pyromania.

As with many artists, my imagination is triggered primarily from natures' designs and in particular, those that are found around the beaches of the British Isles.

My inspiration gained from this source comes not only from the wealth of spontaneous designs, textures and forms, but from the invigorating feeling that I get wandering the beaches in virtual isolation on cold and windy days in winter and spring.

What I gain from these forays along the beaches can vary considerably on each visit, and probably differ from what other people may gain.

My fascination with the colours and patterns that are just waiting to be discovered is hard for me to explain. The influences of light, weather and lack of people play a considerable role in their visibility to the eye.

Certainly there is a sense of discovery and an excitement in capturing it on camera, particularly when finding a pattern that is only there for a short period of time - like the tide impressions in the sand.
