I cannot be the only person who is continually frustrated by not being able to pacify my itchy fingers by stroking sculptural forms in museums and galleries.

As a fairly new maker, my prime aim in developing this range was to create forms that had the individuality of studio pieces and smooth tactile surfaces, which would encourage people to stroke them - 'touchy feely' pieces.

The simplistic and spherical nature of many of the forms is based on the uncomplicated and flowing beauty of pebbles. These powerful natural shapes, provide smooth contours for the process of burnishing, which is a key element of my work

The surface decorations are inspired by the intriguing images of rocks, debris & tide patterns I capture on camera during my beach forays..

Producing my forms using primarily the low-tech process of hand building, burnishing and smoke-firing was an ideal method for achieving this effect.

The extensive burnishing gives a smooth and softer feel than you often get with glazes. In contrast to this smoothness I sometimes add a 'little bit of rough'.

Applying the surface decoration through smoke-firing adds a spontaneity and 'unique' dimension to each form.

All the forms are made from 'Tile' material using a mixture of hand-building and press-moulding techniques.

Once the forms are coated in slip and extensively burnished, they are biscuit fired.

The surface design is created using a variety of resists, such as a clay slurry and wax, before being smoke-fired in a pit with newspaper.

This technique, as with raku, results in considerable thermal shock to the pieces and consequently surface irregularities can occur.

Due to the making processes, these forms are recommended for internal use only and it is advisable to keep them out of direct sunlight.

They can be cleaned using a soapy cloth and polished occasionally with beeswax.
